California DMV Permit Test Guide 2026: Ages, Test Format, and Requirements

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) runs licensing for the state’s roughly 27 million licensed drivers, the largest driver population in the country. Appointments are booked online and walk-in service is slow; always book ahead for knowledge tests.

  • Minimum age: 15½ years old (after completing a driver education course, or at 17½ without one).
  • Application: complete the online DL/ID application, get parental signature if under 18, and provide proof of identity and residency.
  • Knowledge test: 46 multiple-choice questions; you must answer 38 correctly (83%). Offered at DMV offices or online in some cases.
  • Vision test: 20/40 acuity with or without correction.
  • Fee: covers three knowledge-test attempts within 12 months.

After holding the permit for at least 6 months, completing 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training, and logging 50 hours of supervised practice (10 at night), you may take the driving test at age 16+.

Provisional restrictions for the first 12 months:

  • No driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. without a documented need (school, work, medical, or family emergency).
  • No passengers under 20 unless a licensed adult 25+ is present.

Adults skip driver education requirements and the provisional stage. The knowledge test for adults is shorter (36 questions, 3 wrong allowed), and there is no mandatory holding period, you can take the behind-the-wheel test as soon as you feel ready.

California licenses renew every 5 years. The federal REAL ID (upgrade marked with a bear-and-star) requires an office visit with proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of residency, worth doing well before airport travel deadlines.

Based on the official California Driver Handbook:

  • Right-of-way at uncontrolled intersections and four-way stops
  • California’s “Basic Speed Law”: never faster than conditions allow
  • School bus red-light rules and school-zone 25 mph limits
  • Bike lanes and pedestrian right-of-way (heavily tested in CA)
  • Blood-alcohol limits: 0.08% adults, 0.01% under 21, 0.04% commercial
  • Carpool-lane rules, turn signals, and parking on hills (curb wheels)
  1. Read the official handbook once, slowly, the test quotes it nearly verbatim.
  2. Focus on numeric facts (speeds, distances, BAC limits, curfews); make flashcards for each.
  3. Take practice tests until you score 46/46 twice in a row, CA’s 83% pass mark gives little slack (only 8 wrong answers).
  4. Book the earliest morning appointment; test centers are calmer and you will not be rushed at closing time.
  • Confusing when passengers must yield to merging traffic on freeways.
  • Misremembering the under-21 BAC limit (0.01%, essentially zero).
  • Missing that bicycles in bike lanes have right-of-way when you turn across the lane.
  • Assuming a red right-turn arrow works like a plain red light (it does not, wait for green).
